Instrument Rating

Group 1 Instrument Ratings are for conventional twin-engine airplanes, Group 2 for multi-engine center line thrust airplanes, Group 3 for single-engine airplanes and Group 4 for IFR ratings on helicopters.  The Course requirements are found in CARS 421.46.
Privileges/ Restrictions:

The holder of a licence endorsed with an instrument rating may exercise
   - The privileges of the licence under IFR in accordance with Part VI, Subpart 2,  Division VII in respect of the group of aircraft endorsed on the licence;   
     and
   - The privileges accorded by a VFR OTT rating.

Skill:

An applicant shall successfully complete:
   - A flight test in accordance with the Flight Test Standards - Instrument Rating (TP 9939E); or
   - A Pilot Proficiency Check (PPC) for operations under IFR in accordance with Part VI or Part VII, as applicable.

Knowledge:

An applicant shall have obtained a minimum of 70% on the written examination Instrument Rating (INRAT) which shall include the following subjects:

- Canadian Aviation Regulations;
- Instrument Flight Rules and Procedures;
- Meteorology;
- Instruments;
- Radio and Radar systems; and
- Navigation.

*Group 1 Instrument Ratings at this time are possible only if the student provides the twin engine airplane.
*Group 3 Instrument Ratings by pre-arrangement so school can ensure aircraft equipment certified for IFR Flight Rules.

Minimum Age:
17

Medical:
Category 3 or 1

Pre-requisite:
Private Pilot Licence

Flight Training:
-50 hours PIC Cross Country Experience on airplanes or helicopters with min. 10 hrs on airplanes.
-40 hrs dual instrument flight time with a max. of 20 hrs on an approved simulator.
-1 dual cross country flight under actual or simulated IMC conditions of at least 100 NM, IFR flight plan and approaches at two different airports to minima.

Examinations:
-Flight Test in accordance with TC test standards. TP 9939E
-Written Exam, INRAT with min. 70 %.
